Strategy
Planting trees and ensuring that the survival rate is high is one of the responsibilities that The Art of Living takes seriously. The trees we have planted have a 90% survival rate. This has been possible because of our 3- step strategy:
- Planting saplings and plants and using drip irrigation
- Digging deep trenches to protect from animals
- Daily monitoring to avoid unforeseen mishaps
Drip irrigation systems bring down water footprint and thereby maintenance costs significantly. Creation of deep trenches helps in reducing sapling protection costs significantly as compared to building individual tree guards around each sapling to protect them from being local cattle. These trenches help in harvesting rainwater and thereby keeping soil moisture content high season, which is very critical for the high survival rate of saplings.

I owned 22 acres and initially grew soybean, harbhara, and toor, earning around Rs. 40 to 50 thousand per acre. Inspired by Gomare ji, I dedicated 2 acres to guava. The results were impressive - 25,000 kg from just one acre! Profits doubled in the second year to Rs. 80 to 90 thousand per acre. Guava farming requires minimal water - just 2 to 3 hours a week. The water needed for one acre of sugarcane can support 4 acres of guava, with double the yield.

I am Vandana Saurangpate, Sub Division Officer in Ramtek. In Ramtek, there were many barren places like Narayan Tekdi in which we sowed 1,00,000 seeds. Many students, government employees, locals and volunteers participated enthusiastically in large numbers in this project. Programmes like this should continue because they help maintain the balance in nature. The need of the hour is to plant lots of trees. I am grateful to The Art of Living for conducting this event and I hope that we will see more such Laxman Vishwanath Dandime programmes in the future.

In response to water scarcity during summer, I switched to planting custard apple on 6 acres, with guidance from Gomare ji. This low-water crop transformed my harvests. Encouraged, 25 farmers joined to plant custard apple and guava collectively. These fruits thrive in dry summers, needing minimal watering. Our success story inspired others to adopt sustainable farming practices, reducing water and fertiliser usage.

The ongoing transformation of Tetawali in Navi Mumbai, spearheaded by the Government of Maharashtra, Hariyali; and The Art of Living's Vyakti Vikas Kendra India; is a success story in urban reforestation. Under a seven year agreement, the project has revitalised 33 acres, gradually giving rise to a thriving urban forest. Ongoing observations have unveiled a 2° temperature decrease in comparison to surrounding areas, encouraging collaborative endeavours worldwide aimed at combating climate change and fostering sustainability.
